Amateur radio is split into bands named by their approximate wavelength (the lower the band, the longer the wave and the further it tends to travel by skywave). The world is divided into three IARU regions whose exact edges differ slightly, so the ranges below are summarised — Region 1 is Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Region 2 the Americas, Region 3 Asia-Pacific. The shorter VHF/UHF/microwave bands are mostly line-of-sight and used for repeaters, satellites and data.
